Wow, snow!! Can you believe it? I hope you are all staying warm:-)
Today almost every student was able to get logged into Aeries so that they can see their grades. Please review the email from last week that outlined Aeries (and PLEASE let me know if you did not get it! We are having some glitches with Aeries emails and I don't know about them or that I need to correct them unless I hear from you) Unfortunately, I am a little behind in my grading due to my being gone both Thursday and Friday last week, so you won't see updates in Aeries for assignments until mid-week. Math: This week we are finishing up Chapter 2 and will have a Chapter 2 test on Thursday and possibly on Friday. Today students created their own proficiency scales so that they can better understand our 1-4 grading system and how we use proficiency scales. Science: We are looking a bit at Climate Change. This week we will be tracking local weather and look at monthly trends. This will be fun since the weather is so wacky right now. BRRRR!! As always, if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Also, if students are struggling with a concept or idea, please encourage them to come talk to me as soon as possible. Have a great week! Mrs. Worster Buenas tardes familias de 6to grado, ¡Guau, nieve! ¿Puedes creerlo? Sra. Worster

Happy Monday!! Feels like fall is here:-) Just a heads up I will be gone Thursday and Friday this week.
Students will be getting work back in their red folders this week. Many will have the comment "show your thinking." This means that I would like to see the steps that students took to get to their answers. You should also have received a "Technology Consent" form. Please send this form in as soon as possible so that we can start using some great programs. There are a few in particular that are really useful: Freckle and Khan Academy. These are two programs that are great for individualized math practice. Math: Lessons 2.3.1 - 2.3.4 focus on Generic Rectangles, Least Common Multiple, Greatest Common Factor and the Distributive Property Science: Finish our Engineering Design Towers. This was a fun activity that helped students understand the scientific and Engineering process. We are starting our pilot program this week. The unit is on Weather and Climate. Using Aeries: Please check Aeries once a week to keep updated on your child's progress! If you have a question about a particular grade, I encourage you to ask your child first, then let the teacher know if there are further questions. I'm always happy to have a conversation about your child's progress. You can find grades for each of your child's classes on the Homepage in Aeries. Click the blue link to each class to find specifics about that class. Each assignment is entered with a title that should indicate what was asked of the student. If there is more information necessary, you’ll find it in the description. You can click the + to the left of the assignment to get a quick description. Categories: Each assignment is given a category, so that students and parents understand how they are progressing in a bit more detail. The categories add up to the overall subject grade. Categories are listed at the bottom of each class page under TOTALS. Math has domain categories: Number Systems, Ratios/Proportions, Expressions/Equations, Geometry, and Statistics. We also added a Work Habits category, as we find that there is often a direct correlation with how students are working in math and how they are performing on assessments. Science has categories based on discipline: Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science and Engineering and Science Practices. Grades (aka Scores): 4: Exceeds learning standards 3: MEETS 6th GRADE EXPECTATIONS 2: Approaching learning standards 1: Not at grade level Each assignment is given a score above, with the possible addition of .5 to each number. If at any time a student is not happy with a grade, they may communicate with the teacher and find a way to show new learning for a new grade. Occasionally, a grade may not be redone, depending on classroom circumstances. (A note on %: Standards referenced grading does not always translate in Aeries. We recommend that you look at the assignment grade itself to understand how your child is doing.) Missing Work vs. Not Yet Graded Work: Missing work is indicated by a red/orange square () This means that the student did not turn the work in. They need to make an arrangement with the teacher to get the work done/turned in. Not yet graded work simply does not have a grade with it, but it does show how many points the assignment is worth (e.g. - /4). Check the column that indicated "Grading Complete" to see if grades have been entered yet. All assignments must be completed by the end of the marking period in order to receive credit! Students are counseled on this, and we do explicit teaching/calendaring on prioritizing work in order to have an accurate progress report. Comments: As much as possible, especially when a grade is outside of what's expected, I add a comment to let you know more details. Because a "3" communicates that the student is doing what is expected, there are normally not comments with a 3. Often, the comment will be a suggestion that the student redo/resubmit the work to show updated learning. ¡¡Feliz lunes!! Wow, wasn't that a fun storm that came through today! It definitely got a lot of the kids excited:-) It was so great to meet so many of you last week at back to school night. Thank you for coming!
Math: This week we are starting our new centers with a focus on area and perimeter of two dimensional regions. You will be seeing a homework packet coming home that is due Friday. We are all going to be going through each center together this week so that we can set everyone up for success to be more independent in the coming weeks. Science: We finished our scientific sketches today and learned how to attach a picture to google classroom. We are going to be starting an engineering design activity tomorrow where students will be designing and building towers out of spaghetti. This is always a fun activity. Aeries and Google Classroom have been updated. Please check it with students to see if they have any missing assignments and to check out the format. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I have really appreciated the communication so far. Have a wonderful week. Mrs. Worster What a week!! I am so thrilled to be back in the classroom with so many wonderful students. We are definitely easing back into things, but are ramping up this week. I sent home a math Pre-Assessment today that is due back on Friday (9/13) . Students should also finish up their life timelines that they started last week, these are due on Wednesday (9/11).
In class we have been focusing on how to work as a team. There will be quite a bit of team/group work this year and it is important for students to get comfortable and confident speaking up and sharing ideas, and listening to their teammates. In science we got our Science Journals going with our first journal entry on Observations and Inferences. We started something called "SMART Start" on Friday last week where students rotate to every 6th grade teacher to learn something that will help them be successful in 6th grade. It is also a nice opportunity for students to meet all the teachers they will be seeing in classes and in the hallways. I hope you are all enjoying your first weeks! Please never hesitate to get in touch with me by email: [email protected] or by phone 530-582-2750 ext 28104. |
